BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare and life-threatening type of ectopic pregnancy, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 30,000 pregnancies. Diagnosis and management can be challenging, particularly in low-resource settings.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of advanced abdominal ectopic pregnancy resulting in a live female neonate weighing 2800 grams, delivered through laparotomy. The patient is a 30-year-old woman from rural Ethiopia, gravida 5 para 4, who does not recall her last normal menstrual period but has been amenorrheic for the past 8 and 1/2 months. She presented with abdominal discomfort and an increase in foetal movement in the upper abdomen over the past 20 days. Both the mother and the newborn are doing well and were discharged in good condition.
CONCLUSION: Advanced abdominal ectopic pregnancy is an exceedingly rare pre-operative diagnosis. Careful planning that involves a multidisciplinary team is crucial to avoid unforeseen life-threatening complications.
