EFFECTIVENESS OF THEORY-BASED PEER EDUCATION ON KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES, AND UTILIZATION OF LONG-ACTING REVERSIBLE CONTRACEPTIVES AMONG PASTORAL WOMEN IN SOUTHERN ETHIOPIA

Abstract

Background: Knowledge and a positive attitude toward contraceptive methods are prerequisites for contraceptive utilization. Most reproductive-age women know little or have incorrect information about family planning methods. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of interactive health education methods on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of long-acting reversible contraceptive utilization among pastoral women in southern Ethiopia.

Methods: A community-based quasi-experimental study design was conducted with 192 experimental groups and a control group using pre- and post-intervention measurements. Eight trained healthcare workers provided interactive health education methods, including lectures, peer education, and reasoned action theory models, on the knowledge, attitudes, and utilization of long-acting reversible contraception for the experimental group, whereas the control group received only routine family planning counseling. The Mann?Whitney U test was used to compare the mean differences in knowledge and attitude scores between the control and experimental groups.

Results: At the end line, the results revealed a significant difference between the mean knowledge difference between the control and experimental groups (control mean rank=59.32, n=96) and experimental mean rank =129.33, n=89), U=1039, Z=-8.949, r=0.66, p=0.001), and the mean attitude difference between the control and experimental groups (control mean rank=72.9, n=96) and experimental mean rank= 114.69, n=89), U=2342, Z=-5.315, P=0.001, r=0.39.

Conclusion: Interactive health education methods, including lectures, peer education, and reasoned action theory models, are essential for improving the utilization of long-acting reversible contraception. Therefore, in addition to enhancing women's education and empowering women, national policy and family planning guidelines must incorporate a distinct component of contraceptive information and personal behavioral change theories and incorporate role model women into health education methods.
